How to Open a NEF File (Nikon RAW) for Free

A NEF file is a Nikon RAW photo. Free tools like NX Studio, RawTherapee, and IrfanView can open, edit, and convert it without any paid software.

A .nef file contains unprocessed sensor data straight from a Nikon camera. Unlike a JPG, it has not been compressed or colour-corrected by the camera. That is a feature, not a problem.

The trade-off is that a NEF file needs a program that understands the RAW format. A standard photo viewer may fail or show only a low-quality preview.

The good news is that several free tools handle NEF well.

Just view it (no editing needed)

If you only need to see the photo, a few free options work on Windows.

Windows 10 and 11 Photos can display many RAW files once you install the free Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. Search for “Raw Image Extension” in the Store, install it, and Photos will open your NEF files without any other software.

IrfanView and XnView are also free image viewers that support NEF. Both are lightweight and open quickly.

Download tools from their official sites. Programs like RawTherapee and IrfanView are best downloaded from their own websites. Random “NEF opener” download pages often bundle adware or worse.

Open and edit it (free RAW editors)

Viewing is fine for a quick check. But a RAW file is meant to be processed. The small JPG preview embedded inside the NEF is not the full-quality image, so working with the RAW data is where the real value is.

These free tools give you full control over exposure, colour, and sharpness:

Nikon NX Studio is Nikon’s own free software. It is designed specifically for NEF files, so compatibility is excellent. Download it from Nikon’s official website.

RawTherapee is a free, open-source RAW editor that opens NEF files with complete control over every aspect of the image. It is more complex than a basic viewer but produces high-quality results.

Darktable is another free and open-source RAW editor that handles NEF. It uses a non-destructive workflow, meaning your original file is never changed.

GIMP, the free image editor, can also open NEF files with a plugin. It is better suited for pixel editing after the RAW conversion than for the initial RAW processing step.

Steps to open and develop a NEF file in RawTherapee:

  1. Download RawTherapee from rawtherapee.com.
  2. Open RawTherapee and use the File Browser to locate your NEF file.
  3. Double-click the file to open it in the Editor.
  4. Adjust exposure, white balance, and colour as needed.
  5. Click Queue or Export to save the result as a JPG.

Convert it to JPG

Once you have adjusted the photo in any of the editors above, export or save it as a JPG. That gives you a file any device or app can open and share.

Export from Nikon NX Studio, RawTherapee, or Darktable all work the same way. Open the NEF, make your adjustments, then choose JPEG as the output format and export. Any of these free tools can produce a full-quality JPG from the RAW data.

If you shoot Canon RAW instead of Nikon, the free workflow is similar. See the guide to opening CR2 files for the Canon equivalent steps.

Is the file definitely a NEF?

If the file is not opening as expected, confirm it really ends in .nef. Windows hides file extensions by default, so what looks like “photo.nef” might actually be “photo.nef.jpg”. To check, see how to show file extensions in Windows.

Some Nikon cameras save a .nrw file instead of .nef. The two are closely related but not identical. The same free tools above generally handle both.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my NEF file look dark or flat when I first open it?

RAW files look flat by default because no in-camera processing has been applied. Adjusting exposure and contrast in RawTherapee or NX Studio brings out the detail. That is the whole point of shooting RAW.

Can I open a NEF file without installing anything?

Windows Photos handles NEF on Windows 10 and 11 after you add the free Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store. That is the lowest-friction option if you just want to view the file.

Is the embedded JPG preview the same as the full NEF image?

No. The preview embedded inside a NEF is a small, camera-processed JPG used for quick viewing. The actual RAW data contains far more detail and editing headroom. Always process the RAW file for best quality.

Can I open a NEF file on my phone?

Most phone apps do not support NEF directly. Convert the file to JPG on a computer first using RawTherapee or NX Studio, then transfer the JPG to your phone.
