How to Open an EPUB File (Free Ebook Readers)
An .epub file is a standard ebook format. It stores text and images in a way that reflows to fit any screen size.
To open an EPUB file: on Windows, use the free Calibre app or Microsoft Edge. On a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, Apple Books opens it directly. On Android, any free ebook reader app will work.
The right approach depends on your device. Here is each one.
Windows: Calibre or Microsoft Edge
Calibre is a free, open-source ebook manager. It is the most capable EPUB option on Windows and the one most readers end up using. Download it from the official Calibre website, not from a third-party mirror.
To open an EPUB in Calibre:
- Download and install Calibre from its official site.
- Open Calibre and click Add books to import your EPUB file.
- Double-click the book in your library to open the built-in reader.
Microsoft Edge can also open EPUB files. Right-click the file, choose Open with, and select Microsoft Edge.
Edge renders it as a readable book. Navigation controls appear at the bottom.
Download Calibre from the official site. Calibre is a popular tool and is also spread via unofficial download pages. Always get it from calibre-ebook.com to avoid bundled software.
Mac, iPhone, and iPad: Apple Books
On Apple devices, no extra software is needed.
Apple Books opens EPUB files directly on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
On a Mac, double-click the EPUB file. Apple Books opens and adds it to your library.
On an iPhone or iPad, tap the file (from an email attachment, the Files app, or a download). Choose Open in Books from the share sheet. The book appears in your library right away.
Android: free reader apps
Android does not have a built-in EPUB reader.
Search the Google Play Store for “epub reader” and pick one with strong reviews. Many good options are completely free.
Once the app is installed, tap the EPUB file to open it. If your phone asks which app to use, select your reader and tap Always to set it as the default.
Kindle: a note on compatibility
Kindle devices and the Kindle app historically used their own formats. They did not open EPUB files directly.
That has changed. Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” service now accepts EPUB files. Email an EPUB to your Send to Kindle address and Amazon converts it for you.
Calibre is the alternative. It can convert an EPUB to a Kindle-friendly format if you prefer to handle the conversion yourself.
Convert an EPUB to another format
Calibre handles conversion in either direction. Use it to turn an EPUB into a PDF, or into a format your ebook reader requires.
If your device needs something else, check Calibre’s supported output formats. The list is long.
You can also pair this with other document types you work with. For Word documents, the guide on how to open a .doc file covers that separately.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about EPUB files, answered briefly.
Why can’t I open my EPUB file on Windows?
Windows has no built-in EPUB reader. You need Calibre, Microsoft Edge, or another reader app. If you are unsure whether your file is actually an EPUB, show file extensions in Windows so you can see the .epub ending clearly.
Can I open an EPUB file without installing anything?
On a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, Apple Books is already there and handles it. On Windows, Microsoft Edge may already be installed and can open EPUB. That is the no-extra-install route on Windows.
Is Calibre safe to download?
Yes, when you download it from calibre-ebook.com. Calibre is a well-established open-source project. Avoid third-party download mirrors.
Can Kindle open EPUB files?
Kindle devices do not open EPUB files natively. Use Amazon’s “Send to Kindle” service to convert an EPUB before it reaches your device, or use Calibre to convert the file first.
Can I read an EPUB file in my browser?
Microsoft Edge can open EPUB files directly. Other browsers generally cannot without an extension.
